Catoire: Violin Sonata No. 2

This program creates an unexpected yet deeply rewarding dialogue between two composers separated by geography but united by lyricism and depth.

Gabriel Fauré, the French master of refined harmonies and delicate textures, redefined the intimacy of chamber music with sonatas that glow with elegance, tenderness, and quiet intensity. His music radiates an unmistakable French clarity—at once noble and deeply expressive.

Georgy Catoire, often called the “Russian Fauré,” was a Moscow-based composer whose works are still rarely performed. A student of Tchaikovsky’s circle and admirer of French Impressionism, Catoire infused his violin sonatas with both Slavic passion and French-influenced sophistication. His voice, once nearly forgotten, now emerges as a striking complement to Fauré’s artistry.

Heard together, these sonatas form a bridge across cultures—French refinement meeting Russian soul—in a concert of discovery, elegance, and emotional resonance.
