Dora Pejačević

Dora Pejačević (1885–1923) was a pioneering Croatian composer whose works bridged Romanticism and early modernism. Born into nobility in Budapest, she began composing at age 12 and pursued private studies in Zagreb, Dresden, and Munich. Her compositions include the first Croatian piano concerto and the Symphony in F-sharp minor, regarded as Croatia’s first modern symphony. Influenced by literary figures like Rilke and Nietzsche, her music evolved to reflect themes of introspection and existential depth. During World War I, she served as a nurse, an experience that profoundly impacted her artistic voice. Pejačević died at 37 from complications following childbirth, leaving behind a legacy of 58 opuses.
